E-Com TL;DR: Value Deals, AI Stylists, Gen Z Pullback & What Shoppers Want this Holiday

Welcome back to E-Com TL;DR, your weekly spotlight on what’s shifting in US ecommerce and consumer behavior. With the holidays around the corner, this week is all about what shoppers want: value, trust, and smart experiences that make the season easier.

1. JCPenney Goes Big on Holiday Deals — Here’s How You Can Do The Same Without National Ads.

JCPenney, still a multibillion-dollar retailer, is flexing its scale this season by booking weekly ad spots during Amazon Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football.

That’s serious real estate, and it shows how committed the brand is to staying top-of-mind as shoppers hunt for value.

The campaign, called “Really Big Deals,” mixes weekly promotions with humor-driven ads and even an exclusive Bob Mackie collection to bring some fashion buzz back into the fold.

But here’s the translation for smaller D2C players: you don’t need national TV buys to replicate the same idea. Platforms like TikTok now function almost like modern-day QVC.

Imagine running weekly holiday deal drops as short, punchy live streams or pre-recorded spots that showcase your products, highlight discounts, and bring in urgency.

Shoppers already expect fun, fast, personality-driven content on TikTok, so it’s a natural stage for replicating the cadence of “weekly deals” in a way that builds anticipation and keeps customers coming back throughout the season.

2. Ralph Lauren’s “Ask Ralph” AI Assistant – Luxe Styling Meets Conversational Commerce

Ralph Lauren has rolled out Ask Ralph, an AI‐powered stylist inside its U.S. app made in partnership with Microsoft / OpenAI’s Azure. The assistant lets users ask open‐ended style questions (“What to wear to a brunch?” “Can I pull off black & brown?”), and delivers curated outfit looks drawn from Ralph Lauren’s current inventory and archives.

It feels premium, polished, very on-brand. But there are still missing pieces: the app doesn’t yet allow photo uploads from customers, lacks full chat history memory, and still nudges customers to try in store for fit.

What to learn:

  • If you can build a brand app with inventory-aware styling recommendations, that’s a differentiator.

  • Be mindful: polish + UX matters. If the tool feels half baked, customers notice.

  • Use this kind of AI feature to strengthen retention & engagement, not just acquisition.

3. Gen Z is Pulling Back: And It Could Drag Overall Holiday Sales Down ~5%

Gen Z isn’t the “kids with impulse buys” segment anymore. The oldest in this group are nearing 30, many juggling rent, student loans, and bigger financial responsibilities. And it’s showing in their shopping habits.

Surveys ahead of the holidays point to nearly a 25% pullback in Gen Z’s planned spend, even as older generations hold steady or increase slightly.

For the industry, that’s huge: Gen Z is now the largest single consumer segment heading into the holidays, so their shift toward budgeting has ripple effects across categories.

What’s happening is less about them abandoning shopping and more about becoming intentional

They’re prioritizing essentials, meaningful purchases, and brands that feel worth it — not just chasing every discount. For retailers, this means promotions alone won’t do the trick. To capture Gen Z dollars, campaigns need to combine value with story: limited drops, collaborations, cultural relevance, and experiences that justify the spend.

In short, Gen Z is growing up, and holiday strategies need to grow up with them.

4. Holiday Shopping Is Getting Pulled Forward — Prices and Tariffs are Spark Plugs

Consumers aren’t waiting this year. Between inflation, new tariffs, and worries about rising prices, many are already shifting purchases forward. According to Deloitte, holiday sales in the U.S. are expected to rise just 2.9-3.4% this year — the slowest growth since the pandemic — with total spending forecasted at $1.61-$1.62 trillion, up from $1.57 trillion last holiday season.

Where shoppers are changing behavior most: online. E-commerce holiday growth is pegged at 7-9%, keeping pace with last year, while in-store growth lags at 2-2.2%.

Gen Z is leading the pull-back. Their holiday gifting budgets are down about 23%, per PwC, with overall gift spending expected to fall 11%. And 84% of consumers say they expect to cut back on broader spending — things like apparel, dining out, or “non-essentials” — over the next six months

What we’re seeing is shoppers acting early not just out of habit, but out of concern: fear that prices will rise, supply will tighten, and deals will vanish. That means brands that get out in front — with early promos, clear messaging, and inventory visibility — are likely to catch more of that advanced spend.

5. Product Reviews & AI: Amazon is Evolving What Customers See

Amazon is using AI to help customers navigate product reviews more intelligently.

Rather than overwhelming pages of reviews, AI summaries or highlights are being tested to help shoppers pick up key insights quickly.

For example: what features people mention most, what complaints are common, etc. This aims to speed up purchase decisions and reduce decision fatigue. (From recent CNBC/industry reporting.)

What to learn:

  • If you sell on Amazon (or other marketplaces), review health matters — not just quantity, but what customers are saying.

  • Think about how you can surface or design your own product review summaries or highlights on your site—to mimic what shoppers are starting to expect.

  • Use feedback loops: see what customers complain about, what they love, and iterate product pages and communication (descriptions, photos, etc.) accordingly.

That’s a wrap this week. As we head deeper into holiday prep mode, the brands that combine value, trust, and smart tech are the ones that’ll stand out.
