What the Top 1% of Ecommerce Stores Do Differently (And How You Can Too)

There are over 11.9 million ecommerce stores in the U.S. alone.

Yet if you dig into the numbers… Only a tiny fraction of them ever become truly successful. Most don’t make it past their first year. Only 4% of US businesses hit the 1M USD revenue mark And only 0.5% of those manage to hit the 10M USD a year milestone. Over the last six years, I’ve worked with 200+ ecommerce brands directly and audited the setup of thousands more. Across all that experience, one thing has become crystal clear:

? The top 1% of brands think and operate completely differently than the rest.

It’s not about having an unlimited ad budget. It’s not about having the fanciest website. It’s not even about selling the “perfect” product. The brands that pull ahead are the ones that execute the basics better and smarter than anyone else. They focus on the right strategies, at the right time, for the right reasons.

And in this blog, I’m going to break down exactly how you can do the same?and leave 99% of your competition in the dust.

Let’s dive in.

1. Create Content That Stops the Scroll (and Sells Your USP)

Most ecommerce brands treat content like a checklist: Post a photo, write a caption, maybe throw in a hashtag or two. But the brands that truly win understand something deeper:

Content isn’t about showing off your product. It’s about making your customer see themselves in your brand.

The first 3 seconds are everything. You need to grab attention fast, solve a real problem, and make people feel something whether that’s confidence, curiosity, or belonging. And every piece of content should quietly but clearly reinforce your USP (Unique Selling Proposition).

Take Rare Beauty for example. You’d think being backed by Selena Gomez would mean endless glamour shots of her face everywhere. Instead, Rare Beauty made a conscious decision: the focus isn’t Selena it’s the community. Their content highlights real customers of all skin tones, all backgrounds, celebrating individuality over perfection. The result?

Rare Beauty isn’t just “another celebrity brand” it’s a movement where customers feel seen.

And that’s the point: great content isn’t about you. It’s about them.

? How You Can Apply This:

? Lead with your USP. Every post should answer: “Why should someone care about this right now?”

? Feature your customers. UGC, customer stories, testimonials, raw footage?whatever makes people say, “That’s me!”

? Solve a problem, don’t just showcase a product. Show the outcome your product gives them, not just the item itself.

? Invest in scroll-stopping visuals. High-quality photography (even AI-assisted) builds instant trust.

? Make your customer the hero. You’re the guide, not the star. Help them win.

2. Set Up Email Marketing (Your 24/7 Profit Machine)

Most ecommerce brands treat email like an afterthought. A discount blast here, a random newsletter there, and then a Black Friday campaign at the end of the year after completely forgetting to nurture their email subscribers all year long.

But here’s the truth: Email marketing is still the highest-ROI channel in ecommerce today. (According to McKinsey, it delivers 40x return on investment, this is much higher than any other social media channel.)

We’ve seen this play out again and again. One of our clients a wellness ecommerce brand generated $2,842,348 USD in just 30 days through email and SMS marketing alone.

(You can check out the full case study here).

So how did we help them get there? It wasn’t about sending more emails. It was about building a system that sold consistently, 24/7:

  • We rebuilt their automated flows from scratch like abandoned cart, browse abandonment, and post-purchase sequences each one laser-targeted to where the customer was in their journey.
  • We launched regular campaigns that weren’t just “buy now” messages, but a mix of promotions, product education, storytelling, and loyalty rewards.
  • We cleaned and segmented their list aggressively, protecting deliverability and making sure every email hit people who actually wanted to hear from them.
  • We integrated SMS and email into a single strategy, so they worked together (instead of competing for attention).

When done right, email isn’t just a side channel it becomes a full-time profit center that drives sales while you sleep.

3. Focus on CRO: Your Website Is Either Selling or Repelling

Imagine walking into a physical store. The floors are dirty, there’s no clear signage, products are all over the place?and you have to jump through hoops just to pay. How long would you stay?

That’s exactly how online shoppers feel when your website isn’t optimized.

Good Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) isn’t about having a thousand pages or fancy animations. It’s about one thing: making it as easy and natural as possible for someone to say “yes” and buy.

In fact, five great website pages will beat 500 mediocre ones every time.

Take AG1’s website as an example.

It’s simple, but incredibly effective:

  • A clean, emotionally-driven hero section (“Hello Energy, Goodbye Bloat”) that speaks directly to customer desires.
  • A direct, benefit-focused CTA (“Buy Now” and “Learn More”) with zero distractions.
  • A powerful visual comparison chart showing exactly why AG1 is superior to traditional vitamins, probiotics, or greens powders.
  • Trust signals built right in: 50,000+ verified 5-star reviews, third-party safety certifications, 90-day money-back guarantee.
  • Minimal clicks to checkout every page gently nudges you toward the next logical step.

No fluff. No confusion. No endless clicking around. Just a clear path to purchase.

? How You Can Apply This:

? Focus on your hero section first. Above the fold, your site should immediately answer three questions:  What is it?  Who’s it for?  Why should I care? (If someone has to scroll to find out, you’ve already lost them.)

? Make your USP scream from the page. Don’t hide your value in a paragraph halfway down. AG1 says “Hello Energy, Goodbye Bloat” immediately. You need something just as bold and benefit-driven.

? Streamline your navigation. Your menu should have 3-5 max options. No one needs to click through 20 different links just to find what they’re looking for.

? Build trust before asking for the sale. Show real customer reviews, certifications, guarantees, security badges especially near product pages and checkout.

? Guide every page toward one goal. Ask yourself: What’s the next action I want a visitor to take? If a section doesn’t drive toward that goal, cut it or fix it.

? Prioritize mobile experience. Most shoppers are on their phones. Your mobile site needs to load fast, look clean, and make buying effortless.

? Don’t overcrowd your product pages. Keep it tight:  Problem it solves? Main benefits? Social proof? Key ingredients/features? Clear CTA

? Remove anything that causes doubt or hesitation. Slow shipping, vague returns, confusing pricing all of these are silent killers. Fix them before adding another product or collection.

4. Ride the TikTok Shop Wave (Before It’s Too Late)

TikTok has quietly become one of the most powerful platforms for building DTC brands from the ground up.

Brands like Glow Recipe, Summer Fridays, Made by Mitchell, and even premium products like the Dyson Airwrap didn’t just grow?they exploded, thanks to TikTok’s ability to turn a single piece of viral content into millions of dollars in sales.

TikTok isn’t just creating brand awareness; it’s collapsing the gap between discovery and purchase.

And now, with TikTok Shop, they’ve made it even easier.

TikTok Shop allows customers to buy products directly inside the app, without ever needing to leave for a separate website. The entire journey from seeing a product, to wanting it, to buying it?can happen in seconds, without any friction.

For ecommerce brands, it’s one of the biggest land grabs we’ve seen since early Facebook Ads.

Why TikTok Shop is a Huge Opportunity:

  • Lower referral fees (6?8%) compared to Amazon, Etsy, or other marketplaces.
  • TikTok covers most shipping costs, improving your margins.
  • High organic reach for early adopters paid ads aren’t mandatory to get traction (yet).
  • Direct Amazon integration you can sync your Amazon listings with TikTok for fulfillment.
  • More trust built into the platform because purchases happen natively inside the TikTok app where customers already spend hours daily.

? How You Can Apply This:

? Set up your TikTok Shop account today. It’s free to register, and you’ll need to verify your business and upload your product catalog.

? Launch with your most “TikTokable” products. Choose products that are highly visual, have clear transformations, or emotional appeal. Think: skincare, fitness gear, fashion accessories, home gadgets.

? Focus on TikTok-native video content. Forget polished studio ads raw, authentic videos showing real people using your product work best. Reviews, demos, tutorials, unboxings.

? Use TikTok’s Creator Marketplace and affiliate tools. Collaborate with creators who can showcase your products inside the app and drive direct sales.

? Lean into speed and storytelling. Hook viewers in the first 3 seconds. Show the product solving a problem or delivering a “wow” moment fast.

? Take advantage of TikTok’s incentives. Right now, TikTok subsidizes shipping costs and keeps referral fees low (6-8%), making it one of the most profitable marketplaces for early adopters.

5. Master Google Ads (The Unsung Hero for Smarter Acquisition)

When most brands think of Google Ads, they think of Shopping or Search. But Google Ads has evolved and it’s one of the smartest tools you can add to your acquisition mix today.

It’s not just about bidding on keywords anymore. Now you can tap into YouTube Ads, Demand Gen campaigns, and Performance Max to reach customers across the entire funnel from brand awareness to purchase.

You don’t need to pour unlimited budget into Google to make it work either. In fact, we helped one of our clients a healthcare ecommerce brand spending $240,000 a month reduce their cost per click by 73% just by restructuring their campaigns and cleaning up their Merchant Center feed. (You can check out the full case study here).

Google works best when your account is clean, your tracking is accurate, and your creative assets are strong not when you just increase your spend and hope for the best.

? How You Can Apply This:

? Start simple with Shopping and Search Ads. These are perfect for buyers already looking for what you sell.

? Add Performance Max campaigns once you’re stable. PMax covers Shopping, YouTube, Gmail, Display, and Discover all in one campaign. But you need good product feeds and creatives to make it work.

? Test YouTube Ads to build top-of-funnel awareness. Short, engaging videos that show your product in action can win cheap attention.

? Clean your Merchant Center regularly. Fix any errors, keep your product data synced, and stay compliant to avoid performance drops.

? Get tracking right from the start. Accurate Google conversion tracking + GA4 + third-party attribution tools like Triple Whale or Northbeam are non-negotiable if you want to scale smart.

? Think margin-first, not ROAS-first. Google is a powerful growth engine?but only if you manage it with profit in mind, not just vanity metrics.

Wrapping Up: You Don’t Have to Do It All Yourself

If there’s one thing the top 1% of ecommerce brands understand, it’s this:

You don’t win by doing everything on your own. You win by focusing on the right strategies and having the right team behind you.

Most brands get stuck trying to juggle content, email, CRO, TikTok Shop, Google Ads, and a dozen other things… without enough time, expertise, or resources to execute any of them properly.

That’s where we come in.

At Budai Media, we’re built differently. Our growth system is based on three core principles:
